Professional Licensure/Certification Disclosure

Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Students completing this program at LBW Community College will receive an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) and may apply to sit for the following credentials through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS):

• Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) 
• Abdomen (AB)
• Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN)

Students may sit for their SPI, Abdomen, and Obstetrics & Gynecology credentials prior to graduation by meeting ARDMS-specified prerequisites. The LBW Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program also prepares students for the ARDMS credentials below:

• Breast (BR)
• Vascular Technology (VT)
• Adult Echocardiography (AE)
• Pediatric Sonography (PS)

At present, only Oregon, New Mexico, North Dakota, and New Hampshire require state licensure for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. For more information about state licensure, visit https://www.sdms.org/advocacy/state-licensure

While the remaining states do not have any legislation requiring licensure for sonographers, ARDMS credentials are widely recognized in the field and often required by employers.

Emergency Medical Services

Students completing the Emergency Medical Services Program at LBW Community College may apply to sit for the following credentials through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT):

• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification: after completion of EMS118 and EMS119, which comprise the EMT Short Certificate
• Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Certification: after completion of the EMT Short Certificate, as well as EMS155 and EMS156, which comprise the AEMT Short Certificate
• Paramedic Certification: after completion of the full program

Esthetics Technology  

Students completing this program at LBW Community College will receive a Short Certificate in Esthetics Technology and will be eligible to apply for esthetics licensure with the Alabama State Board of Cosmetology. Esthetics licensure requirements in other states vary widely, though many states offer reciprocal licensure for estheticians holding an active license in Alabama.

Nail Technology

Students completing this program at LBW Community College will receive a Short Certificate in Nail Technology and will be eligible to apply for manicurist licensure with the Alabama State Board of Cosmetology. Manicurist licensure requirements in other states vary widely, though many states offer reciprocal licensure for manicurists holding an active license in Alabama.

Nursing

Students completing the Nursing Program at LBW Community College may apply to sit for the following National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) credentials:

• NCLEX-PN: after successful completion of the first three semesters of the program, which comprise the Certificate in Practical Nursing.
• NCLEX-RN: after successful completion of the full five-semester program (Track 1) or the three-semester mobility option (Track 2), which both lead to the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing.

Physical Therapist Assistant

Students who complete the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at LBW Community College will earn an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree and become eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for Physical Therapist Assistants.

Licensure is required to practice as a PTA in all 50 U.S. states and jurisdictions. To be eligible for licensure, candidates must graduate from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) and pass the NPTE for PTAs. Additional licensure requirements such as jurisprudence exams, background checks, or continuing education vary by state.

Licensure Portability: Endorsement and the PT Compact

Although states do not offer automatic licensure reciprocity, PTAs can typically apply for licensure by endorsement when relocating to another state. This process usually requires verification of the current license, completion of a state-specific jurisprudence exam, and fulfillment of any additional criteria set by the new licensing board.

In addition, Alabama is a member of the Physical Therapy Compact, a multi-state agreement that allows eligible licensed PTAs to obtain practice privileges in any of the 34 Compact member states without acquiring a full license in each. To use Compact privileges, licensees must hold an active, unencumbered license in their home state and meet the requirements of the remote state (e.g., passing a jurisprudence assessment).
