Are you planning on applying to a two-year college in Alabama? That’s great news! The process can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re just starting out and not sure what to expect. Community colleges have similar entrance requirements as four-year institutions, so it’s important to come prepared.
Below is the ultimate checklist to refer to when applying to a two-year school in Alabama. Good luck!
Decide what type of student you will be. You need to apply as either full-time or part-time based on your goals. Keep in mind that you may need to be a full-time student if you’re receiving financial aid. Also, keeping a full-time schedule allows you to graduate on time.
Know the registration deadline. Put this date on your calendar. Add it to your phone. You don’t want to wait until the last minute to turn in your application. Give yourself plenty of time to fill out the paperwork and meet with a counselor.
Request your transcripts. Transcripts tell the community college what you have accomplished in high school or college, including the classes you took and the degrees you earned. If you didn’t complete high school, you will only be eligible for select classes.
Submit standardized test scores. Some two-year schools require you to take the SAT or ACT so that they have standardized test scores on file. Check the college for the specific tests they require.
Fill out the application. Each application is different, so follow yours carefully and give yourself plenty of time to fill it out. You may need to submit an essay and schedule an interview.
Show proof of residency. It’s common for two-year schools to ask for a proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or state ID. Many Alabama community colleges give local students a discount for choosing their programs.
Take placement exams. Placements exams are important because they show the school where you place in certain subjects. Some two-year schools will use your standardized tests as your placement exams.
Attend orientation. Orientation gives you an opportunity to tour the school, learn about the programs and meet staff and other students. Attend the orientation, as well as any other meet and greet programs the school runs. It’s a good idea to be active from the start so that you become a familiar face.
Register for classes. After you’ve completed the steps above, you can register for classes. Some fill up fast, so don’t wait. Be sure to choose classes that will help you stay on track with your goals.
