LBW Community College Foundation Announces Dr. Jean Thompson Endowed Scholarship for Greenville Campus

November 14, 2025

LBW Community College is proud to announce the establishment of the Dr. Jean Thompson Endowed Scholarship, created by Dr. Thompson to support sophomore students pursuing a degree in education at the College’s Greenville Campus.

A memorandum of agreement was signed on Nov. 13, officially endowing the scholarship, which will provide financial assistance to qualified students committed to completing their degree in education. Dr. Thompson, a longtime educator, former LBW administrator, and champion of student success, said the scholarship reflects her lifelong belief in the power of education to transform lives.

“I just remember how hard it was to raise money for scholarships in 1993 when we opened the Greenville Campus,” Thompson said. “This will be the third scholarship in the Thompson name. I’m just a believer that education will change your station in life. It did mine.”

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a sophomore education major enrolled at the Greenville Campus. While open to all education majors, additional consideration may be given to students interested in English or Language Arts.

“I wanted somebody who plans to finish college, so I chose the sophomore student,” Thompson said. “I’m an English major and an English teacher at heart, but this scholarship is really about supporting future educators in whatever direction they choose.”

Dr. Thompson’s contributions to education span decades, including her early work in Georgia helping pioneer one of the first dual enrollment programs in the Southeast. After joining LBW in 1993, she played a key role in launching dual enrollment opportunities for local students, advocating tirelessly to expand access despite initial challenges.

LBW Institutional Advancement Director Chrissie Duffy expressed gratitude for Dr. Thompson’s enduring dedication to student opportunity.

“Dr. Thompson has spent her entire career opening doors for others,” Duffy said. “Her generosity and her unwavering belief in the value of education will continue shaping the lives of LBW students for years to come.”

In addition to this new endowment, Dr. Thompson has established scholarships at Auburn University and Georgia State University and plans to create additional opportunities in the future.

The Dr. Jean Thompson Endowed Scholarship will be available to students beginning in the upcoming academic year.
