6 Reasons to Return to College After Taking a Gap Year

    February 19, 2019

Taking a year off college is not the end of the world - or the end of your education. Students take gap years for a number of reasons, such as travel, volunteer, or work purposes. Returning to college after taking this break is a rewarding opportunity that allows you to build on the experiences you had over your gap year.

To ease into college, you may find it helpful to attend an online community college that has flexible class schedules. Below are six reasons to return to college after taking a gap year.

    1. Complete the goals you set out to do.

When you first started college you probably had certain goals you wanted to reach, such as getting your bachelor’s degree in a particular area of study. Just because you took a year off does not mean that these goals cannot be completed. In fact, you probably have a new perspective to contribute to your studies. Return to school and finish the goals you set for yourself.

    2. Provide for your future family.

One day, you will probably have a family to support. It’s never too early to start providing for them. By returning to your studies, you can earn a degree and become qualified in your field. When you’re ready to settle down and have a family you’ll already have the skills and education to land a stable career.

    3. Advance your career.

Sometimes, the only thing standing in between you and the corporate ladder is a lack of education. Maybe you’ve been frustrated with your position at work, which is why a gap year was needed. However, now that you’re back and working part-time, you’re getting that feeling again. Returning to a community college allows you to get your certification and move up in your field.

    4. Open up new possibilities.

When you were enjoying your year-long break you probably learned a lot about yourself. Maybe you discovered your love for travel or volunteering in a third-world country. If you want to continue doing these types of things you will need the money and freedom to do so. Complete your education so that you can do the things you love.

    5. Learn a foreign language.

Perhaps your gap year included traveling to or working in other countries. Ify ou fell in love with the people in a certain region, it’s extremely helpful to learn their language. Fortunately, you can study a foreign language in college and be more prepared for future work and travel experiences.

    6. Pursue new interests and passions.

Gap years are an incredibly insightful time for students. You may have discovered new interests and passions that you didn’t know you had. Many community colleges have continuing education programs that allow you to deepen your interests in meaningful ways. They provide excellent learning opportunities that will bolster your resume.

Taking a gap year can be a healthy addition to your college experience and career. Use this time to enhance your education - not stop it. To learn more about special interest classes at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, contact us today.
