Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for two-year colleges. Its purpose is to recognize and encourage scholarship among college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides the opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate to exchange ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.
The purpose of the Alpha Beta Eta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College is to promote the societys four hallmarks; scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship among qualified students on the Andalusia and MacArthur Campuses of the College. Our members participate in honors satellite seminars, leadership seminars, community service projects, and the annual Covington County Relay for Life.
Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest international honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territories, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, United Arab Emirates and Palau.
The average age (internationally) of a new member is 29, ranging from 18 to 80. Part-time and full-time students are eligible for membership. The average Phi Theta Kappan is enrolled full-time with a GPA of 3.8. The most popular major of Phi Theta Kappans in 2004 was Nursing, followed closely by Education and Business.
To be eligible for membership into the Alpha Beta Eta Chapter, a student must have completed a minimum of twelve hours of associate degree course work and earn a grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Grades for courses completed at other institutions will be considered when determining membership eligibility. A cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.2 must be maintained to remain in good standing or higher. Induction Ceremonies are held twice a year at the beginning of Fall and Spring Semesters.
