LBW Community College students in Andalusia will soon have the opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture when Dr. Iris Hong Xu with the Confucius Institute at Troy University presents “Harmony of Eastern and Western Cultures” on Feb. 28, 9:30 a.m., in the Dixon Center for the Performing Arts.
“Part of the college experience is learning about the diverse nature of the world, including diversity in people, races, ethnic groups, and cultures,” said Diaon Cook, LBWCC’s director of student activities and cultural diversity.
“This resource is close to home and it is exciting to bring them to campus to provide insight into a culture much different than our own.”
Xu is the director of the Confucius Institute and Asian Studies at Troy University, where she is also an associate professor in Chinese language and culture and second language acquisition. She holds two Doctoral Degrees, one in second language acquisition and one in Chinese literature.
Her educational background includes degrees earned from Harbin Teachers University, People’s Republic of China; University of Alberta in Canada; and Northeast Normal University in China. She joined Troy in 2008 following 10 years with Edmonton Public Schools, Alberta, Canada, and more than two decades of experience as a second language teacher, supervisor, consultant, curriculum developer and conceptual designer.
Xu’s presentation at LBWCC in Andalusia will discuss various Chinese traditions and festivals. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 334-881-2256.
