Legislators visit LBWCC

12/5/2012

As the start of the legislative session draws closer, Rep. Jay Love (R-Montgomery) is traveling the state to get a better understanding of the needs of community colleges. Yesterday, he visited LBW Community College in Andalusia and Opp.

“I’ve been trying to get around to as many community colleges as I can,” said Love, who serves as chair of the House Ways and Means Education Committee.

He met with LBWCC President Dr. Herb Riedel and Rep. Mike Jones (R-Andalusia) to tour the two campuses and discuss various needs and plans of the College.

They discussed the history of the college, various technical programs and student placement, primary transfer universities, percentages of students utilizing financial aid, and some hardships students encounter.  They also discussed the impact of declining state appropriations over the last few years.

A tour of a Math Emporium lab filled with students enabled Love to see an innovative approach in learning mathematical skills, a requirement of degree and certificate programs.

“With an estimated $591 million more expected in the education trust fund, it is crucial that legislators understand the role of community colleges in the education system and especially workforce development,” said Riedel.

“We commend Rep. Love for his commitment to learning about the services we provide and the state of our facilities, both important elements in determining the appropriate distribution of funds.”
