FREE Math Booster Camp

LBW Community College in Andalusia is offering a free math booster camp, Aug. 11-13, 2014, 5-9 p.m., in room A119 of the Administration Building.
“We are offering this program for two primary groups,” said Mary Ann Hudson, LBWCC mathematics and science division chair.
“The first group includes anyone who needs a math review to better prepare for their COMPASS placement test.”

COMPASS is a suite of computerized tests that evaluate a student's skills in basic areas, such as reading, writing and mathematics.
“We have found that really good high school math students may have forgotten the basics they learned early, so this review will be a three-day refresher course to help improve their Compass math scores,” she said.
The second group includes students who have taken the Compass test and is registered into one of the developmental math courses, such as Math 090, 098, or 100, she added.
“If someone is already enrolled in one of these courses and they want a chance to jump ahead by attending this camp, they must attend all three nights and score high enough to pass the final exam for that course.
This free service will help parents and adult students save time and money, she said.
“Prospective college students can better prepare and hopefully score higher on the Compass placement test, allowing parents to save the cost of tuition of developmental courses they might otherwise test into,” said Hudson.
The faster students move through developmental courses, the sooner they can take advance courses such as chemistry, physics, and calculus, she said.
“Current students in the basic courses will have the opportunity to take a final exam on Aug. 13, and if they pass, will be allowed to move on to the next course and save the tuition cost of their current course.”
Seats are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The last day to reserve a seat is Aug. 10,  she said.
“All you need to bring is paper and pencil.”
To reserve a seat, email Hudson at, and be sure to include which math class is needed.
