Canvas replaces Blackboard

LBWCC is changing the Learning Management System (LMS) from Blackboard to Canvas.

An evaluation of the LMS was completed by members of the Distance Education Advisory Committee, IT Department, and faculty at LBWCC. After a thorough review of the LMS, the group agreed overwhelmingly to change from Blackboard to Canvas.

Canvas provides students with a clean, simple, and undisruptive learning environment. One of the defining qualities is the system's ability to convey information intuitively. The simplicity of use and loading also factored into the decision to change.

Faculty commented on how much easier Canvas is to organize and re-organize materials and is no longer complex and cumbersome as in Blackboard. Another amazing feature is the drag and drop from your desktop to the file menu structure of canvas. This is light years ahead of Blackboard and most other vendors. Canvas also has apps for Apple products like the iPhone and iPad.

All distance education students registering for hybrid or online classes will use Canvas in the Spring 2013 semester. Students will be able to login to Canvas courses on Monday, January 7, 2013, if tuition and fees have been paid.

The policies and procedures for registering and  being enrolled into distance education courses at LBWCC are the same as before.
